Spellbinders—Birdie Birthday Card

Happy Monday, Crafters!

Today I’m sharing this sweet birdie birthday card using the Sweet Birds on a Branch die set from Spellbinders. This card features about a little bit of everything— stamping, die cutting, stenciling, a the tiniest amount of Copic coloring, but I think it culminated in a great result!

To start this project off, I ink blended Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide on a panel of Concord & 9th white cardstock using the Simon Says Stamp Build a Rainbow stencil to add a cloudy background to the scene. Once this was ink blended, I used a Lawn Fawn Grassy Hillside Border and cut it out of Parsley cardstock from C9. I ink blended a little bit of Parsley ink on the grass for dimension, but it doesn’t seem to show well in my photo.

Once my background was set, I started to work on the birds and the tree. I die cut two trunks out of craft cardstock and all the leaves out of Sprout and Parsley cardstock and started to place them around. I ended up gluing the trunks down, which in my case was an accident since I couldn’t hide the stems of the leaves, so I ended up die cutting two more trunks to sandwich the leave stems between.

Now it was time for birds! I had a lot of fun die cutting these out of different colors of C9 cardstock. The pink bird was cut out of a Ballet Slipper base, the wings and belly were cut out of Grapefruit, and the beak and feet out of Buttercup. The green bird was cut out of a Sprout base, a Parsley wing, and the belly and feet out of Buttercup. The blue bird was cut out of an Oceanside base, a Peacock wing, a Sea Glass belly, and Buttercup feet.

The last bit of die cutting I needed to do before assembling the rest of the scene was the bird house. When I bought the bird die set, I knew I needed a bird house, but I wanted a more streamlined/ contemporary one than what Spellbinders had, and I stumbled upon the Bitty Birdhouse from Simon Says Stamp. This bird house is so sweet. It’s the perfect scale for these birds but would also be cute on its own on a card. I die cut the base of the house out of speckled Sea Glass patterned paper from the C9 Garden Party patterned paper pack and ran it through my die cutting machine a second time using an embossing mat to get more of the bird house texture to it. I die cut the rest of the pieces to the bird house out of plain white cardstock and cut a second layer of the roof and the circle around the opening. After die cutting everything, I made sure to hold on to the inner circle of the bird house so that the house had a back to it and you couldn’t see clouds through it. I ended up using some of my cool grey alcohol markers to darken the circle up. I decided where I wanted my bird house to sit in the scene and glued it down. I adhered my doubled-up roof line, the doubled up white circle opening, and inlaid the grey inner circle. All I had left was the rope that tied the bird house to the tree. I found a nice light terra cotta color in my alcohol marker set and added some color and glued it down.

I glued the pink and green birds in the spaces I had left on my tree branches and popped the blue bird up on the lip of the bird house. I really like how all my die cuts were placed on this card, it makes it seem like the birds are having a social hour haha! I finished the card off by stamping a greeting to the right of the bird house from the coordinating stamp set in Simon Says Stamp Intense Black Ink.

I hope you liked this cheerful birthday card! Thanks for stopping, I hope to catch you next time!
