Oxide Resist Snowflake Thank You Cards
Hi, Friends!
Welcome back to the blog! I hope you had a restful holiday season! My productivity has been pretty low since Christmas partially thanks to my husband being off work since the middle of December. I also switched around my craft room! Now I have a new storage cabinet (VIHALS from IKEA) and a standing desk (also from IKEA). My craft room was just getting back into a semblance of order when I had gotten the news that a family member was in the hospital, and then had unfortunately passed away last week. So needless to say, I haven’t felt very crafty. But, this weekend I was able to sneak in some therapeutic crafty time focusing on emboss resist.
I think emboss resist (specifically oxide resist) has really become one of my favorite techniques since it’s quick and easy and can also be quite mindless. Since I really didn’t want to think too much this weekend, I stuck to that. I was a bit inspired by a Kristina Werner video where she did oxide resist three ways, so I decided to give it a go in a similar way.
I white heat embossed the Outline Snowflakes 6x6 background stamp from Simon Says Stamp on a 6x6 sheet of white cardstock from Concord & 9th, and a larger piece of Canson watercolor paper. I really wanted to use some bright yet soft colors for these cards, so I pulled out Picked Raspberry, Shaded Lilac and Salvaged Patina Distress Oxides. In Kristina’s video she made a card front using the oxides directly and a card front watercoloring with the ink smooshed oxides. So I did just that.
I started off my regular oxide panel by randomly blending on my colors since the oxide resists I’ve been doing lately have all been linear blends. It’s really fun having a randomness to the color! If colors were coming out a little too light, I went back over them to brighten them and blend them into the ones around it. Once the panel was blended to by liking, I set it aside and got working on the watercolor version.
For the watercolor version, I made sure to tape my paper down to a hardboard so that I could tip it to move the pigment around. I smooshed a bit of ink of each color onto my glass mat and added some water to them. I started painting randomly with Picked Raspberry, then moved onto the other colors. Since I was using some pretty cheap watercolor paper, everything dried a bit quicker than I would have liked (I probably should have wet the whole area with clean water before starting though the look would have been a little bit different). I used my heat tool to dry this first layer, then went in for a second layer deepening the colors and encouraging a bit more blending.
With both my backgrounds drying, I got to work on sentiments. I really wanted to make these thank you cards, so I went through my stash as well as pulling out a new stamp set. I die cut the Classic Snowflake die from Waffle Flower out of plain white cardstock and holographic cardstock. I offset the holographic snowflake over a white snowflake and glued it on the oxide snowflake panel once it was cut down to A2 size. To finish the sentiment off, I stamped ‘Snow Many Thanks’ in Shaded Lilac from the Snow Love stamp set from Simon Says Stamp. Lastly, I added some Rock Candy sequins from Trinity Stamps to add a bit of shine.
For the watercolor background, I die cut out a panel using my Waffle Flower Nesting Rectangles dies which trimmed about a 1/4-inch off each side (4 x 5.25). I decided to glue the other white snowflake I had down in the lower right corner so that I could place my sentiment on it. From my stash, I pulled out the Simply Thank You die from Simon Says Stamp and die cut the shadow out of holographic cardstock and the words out of two layers of white cardstock. I glued the sentiment on top of the snowflake, then finished the card off with a spattering of Rock Candy sequins. I really wanted these cards to have that ‘same but different’ vibe to them, and I think I achieved it! I also loved having the white border around the watercolor version—so nice and pretty!
I hope you enjoyed these cards! Lately I’ve been feeling pretty motivated to make thank you cards and birthday cards, so be on the look out for more! Thanks for stopping by today, I hope to catch you next time with more inspiration! 😊
