My Favorite Things— Home for the Holidays Card Kit
Happy Thursday, Crafters!
When I sat down with the November card kit from My Favorite Things (my first of theirs), I had intended to use only the kit contents to make a card. But, I couldn’t help myself, so I used an Essential Arches die from Ellen Hutson, and a new 6x6 background stamp from Simon Says Stamp’s latest release called Christmas Star. I think these products paired so well with this adorable card kit!
The Home for the Holidays card kit comes with a 4x6 stamp set, two die sets—one for the house, and one with holiday accents, an interactive press light kit, 14 sheets of cardstock, and an inspiration sheet. I’m really wowed by this kit! I love the stamp set not only for the holiday greetings, but also for the beautiful mix of fonts for each sentiment. This die set is adorable, and I love that it can be used for more than Christmas cards—it really gives you the bang for your buck! I hope to play around with the press light kit at some point, and I’m impressed by how thick and nice the MFT cardstock is.
I started this card off with the clear plan of the Christmas Star background stamp being the background that this card would be matted on. I used Concord & 9th Midnight cardstock, and heat embossed the stamp using Gilded embossing powder from Brutus Monroe. I cut my Midnight panel down to A2 size, and got to work on the rest of the card. By this point, I was head over heels for how the gold star embossing looked, so I decided to use one of the Essential Arches dies from Ellen Hutson to show more of the background off.
I die cut the arch out of plain white cardstock, and ink blended on Midnight ink (in my head the Midnight star background felt like the night sky, so I attempted to carry this on in the arched scene). Now, here is my one regret: I did not use my usual Concord & 9th white cardstock (which I always use when ink blending), so the ink seemed to not really sink into the paper, which left me with a lot of fingerprints that I would have to attempt to buff out with more ink/the ink leftover on my blending brush. Once the arched panel was blended to my liking, I got to work on the house.
I die cut the body of the house out of Lazy Day cardstock, the rooflines out of Gravel Gray cardstock, and the door and window frames out of Cement Gray cardstock. I die cut the door, shutters, chimney, and light string out of Black Licorice cardstock, and cut squares of Lemon Drop cardstock to put behind the window frames. All of the snow dies were die cut out of Concord & 9th white glitter paper, and the chimney smoke out of regular white cardstock. The trees were die cut out of Field Day and Sour Apple cardstocks, and the wreath was die cut out of Field Day and Wild Cherry cardstocks. And lastly, the light bulbs for the string of lights were die cut out of: Field Day, Orange Zest, Wild Cherry, Lemon Drop, and Cornflower cardstocks.
There were a lot of small pieces to die cut with this card, and at the time of writing this post, I’ve realized I’ve forgotten a doorknob haha. If I remembered, I would have die cut it out of matte gold cardstock. This house was really easy to assemble, the only part that took the most work/was a small pain was assembling the string of lights (but that could just be a me problem).
Once I had it figured out where the house was going to be glued on the card, I chose my sentiment and heat embossed it in the same Gilded embossing powder as the background. I tucked the larger trees behind each side of the house, and glued them down. I glued the smaller trees on top of the edge of the larger ones, glued the house down, then added the snowbanks across the front of the scene. I love how charming this is!
So that wraps up this card! I really like how it turned out, and I think I’ll be sending it to a close family member whose house is about the same color. I love that this die set can be used for more than Christmas— it would be perfect for a new house card paired with the MFT Right at Home sentiments.
I hope you enjoyed this card, and that I’ll catch you next time with more inspiration! 😊
