Multipurpose Dad Cards

These cards are made for the intention of Father’s Day, but would be perfect for masculine birthday cards as well!

Hello crafters!

Today I’m sharing two Father’s Day cards I created. Both have different themes that are based off the recipient’s interests, my father-in-law loves to fish, while my dad has no interest in it!

For my dad’s card, I cut a 6x6 square of Peacock cardstock from Concord & 9th and stamped the Sketched Dots turnabout stamp (also from C9) on it two times, and clear heat embossed it. This turnabout stamp is turning into one of my favorites lately, and I’ll probably keep reaching for it. It’s great for a subtle background for a variety of cards. After heat embossing, I cut the 6x6 panel down to A2 size (4.25 x 5.5). I was inspired from a product photo Concord & 9th had for their Out of This World die set ( linked here Out of This World Dies - Concord & 9th (concordand9th.com) )They had used the Rainbow Card Front die from February’s release as an accent. I did the same and cut Sea Glass, Buttercup (both of these from C9), and two gray cardstocks from a set from Michael’s. In order to make the stripes longer, I took a tip from Jennifer McGuire (the OG crafty queen) and took two stripes of each color and glued them so the short edge of the stripes were touching to make it longer. I covered where the stripes butted up to each other with a large circle die that I ink blended clouds on using a Simon Says Stamp Build A Rainbow stencil and Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide.

I stamped and colored clouds, the banner and the prop plane from the Plane and Simple stamp set from Lawn Fawn. To color the images I used my Ohuhu alcohol markers that I got off of Amazon. When I bought my markers last year, I couldn’t justify spending the money on Copic markers, but I feel the Ohuhus are a good alternative. Once I was done with the coloring, I die cut and started to place my images on the circle. I decided I wanted to add a sun, which is the sun from Outside In Stitched Sun dies from Lawn Fawn.

To finish this card off, I die cut the shadow layer of the ‘dad’ word die from CZ Design out of Peacock cardstock, and the word out of white cardstock.

I think as is, this would be fine as a birthday card with a birthday sentiment stamped inside. But in the stamp set, there was also the option to add ‘happy birthday’ to the banner that the plane is pulling. Or you could even put a birthday sentiment in the lower corner instead.

This card is the one I made for my father-in-law who is an avid fisherman, and when I saw this stamp set from Photoplay I knew it would make a perfect card for him. When I started working on this card, I was originally planning to stamp and clear heat emboss a fish background on either a blue or green cardstock and place my images on top of it. I was planning out my fish pattern on white cardstock, and I ended up really liking the graphic look of it, so I decided to abandon my other plans. After coloring my images, I die cut them and glued them down.

When this card started to come together, I decided I wanted to have the sentiment on vellum so that it wouldn’t hide a lot of the background. To do this, I stamped and heat embossed as normal, but I cut my vellum long so that I could glue it to the back of the fish panel so the glue marks would not be seen. I like that doing this lifted the vellum up a bit from the cardstock and really allows the sentiment to stick out from the background. Once this was done, I die cut an A2 sized piece of Evergreen cardstock from Concord & 9th, and used their Stitched Stripes card front die to give it some texture and visual interest.

Same as with my dad’s card, I think this card could easily double as a masculine birthday card. The sentiments in the stamp set ‘you are a reely great guy’ and ‘you are so fly’ would be a great, punny sentiment that would pair well with ‘happy birthday’. If you had stamps or dies for confetti or birthday presents those would also pair well with this card front to make it more birthday themed as well.

I hope you enjoyed these cards and the ideas to adapt them to birthday cards. Catch ya next time! ;)
