Concord & 9th—Mountainscape Father’s Day Card

Happy Tuesday, Friends!

I hope your week is off to a great start! I’ve been stress-crafting this card over the past day or so thinking that Father’s Day was this coming Sunday (the 11th), but I looked at my calendar this morning and realized all my stress was for nothing, because Father’s Day isn’t until the 18th! So wooohoooo! I’m going to get both my cards out early! Who am I haha?!

This card was inspired by the fact that my father-in-law is a outdoorsy/mountain lover, and I really wanted to play with some products from last year’s C9 Summer Camp. So unfortunately, this product suite isn’t available for purchase, but you can recreate it if you went to camp last year!

Since I thought I was on a time crunch, I decided to just follow what was in the instruction booklet for this card and went with all the color suggestions. The one thing I wanted to change on this card was to make the mountainscape shaped and for it to not take up a whole card front like in camp (you can check out those cards here), and to add a frame to the scene. I started this off by choosing two arch dies from the Essentials by Ellen Essential Arches die set that I thought were a good size to build my scene on, and one that cut out enough of that larger arch to make a thick enough frame for the scene.

With these arches selected, I die cut the larger arch out of Grapefruit cardstock, and once again out of Wheat cardstock. I lined up the smaller arch die on the Wheat arch and centered it as much as possible so that the frame it would cut would be the same on each side. Once I ran that through my die cut machine, I set it aside for later. I went back to the Grapefruit arch and started playing around with where I wanted my sun to be so that I could stencil on the sunrays. I decided to put the sun off to the upper left side so that it would peek out behind the furthest back mountain, lined up the sunray stencil, then blended on some Buttercup ink. We did this is camp last year, and I really like how the Buttercup ink looks on Grapefruit cardstock!

From here I got to die cutting my mountains. I took some scraps (if I didn’t have a scrap, an A2-sized piece) of Aqua Sky, Oceanside, Peacock, and Evergreen cardstocks and cut them down so their width was 3.5-inches so it matched the width of my Grapefruit arch. Since the mountain dies were two unique designs, for my third mountain, I flipped the one I used on the Aqua Sky mountain over and offset the position. I tried to make each mountain have an ‘interesting’ peak as the focal point to each layer so that the finished scene would look a little more intriguing. With the mountains die cut, I blended on the shadows with the mountain peak stencil. This stencil is great because it allows you to add dimension with ink, but it makes the dimension look realistic, like you’re actually seeing crevices/jutting peaks on the mountains.

I die cut the sun out of Buttercup cardstock and glued it down where my sun rays began, then glued down the Aqua Sky mountain so that it covered a portion of the sun. I glued the Oceanside mountain down a little lower, then repeated this with the Peacock mountain. Between each layer, I was trimming off the overhang of cardstock from the bottom of the arch. To finish off my scene, I die cut the tree layer out of a scrap of Evergreen cardstock, glued it down, then trimmed off the excess. I love the grounding the tree layer adds to the card, it really makes you feel like you’re in a forest taking in the mountain view!

Now for the sentiments. I had originally thought about using the ‘dad’ die from the CZ Design Mom & Dad die set like I had used in the Mother’s Day cards I created, but the die was a bit too big for my design. Instead, I pulled out an older stamp set from Honey Bee Stamps called Father’s Day. I decided to go simple with the sentiment on the front of the card, and used the scripty ‘Dad’. I lined up my Wheat frame, then placed the stamp on the Oceanside mountain and white heat embossed it. To finish the card up, I glued the arch onto a panel of Midnight cardstock that I used the Quilted card front die on. I love the subtle texture this brings to the card! For the inside sentiment, I stamped the beautiful ‘Happy Father’s Day’ sentiment from the same stamp set, which I absolutely love! It’s such a fabulous font, and if I could, I would have made a card with it on the front of a card.

Well, that wraps up my Father’s Day cards for this year! Though some other ideas I had floating through my head were to use the Father’s Day die from Hero Arts with the Plaid Turnabout from Concord & 9th. That would make a quick and easy card for sure! Not to mention the new fishing lure die set from Honey Bee Stamps, I love that die set, and it would have been perfect to use for my father-in-law since he loves to fish!

Thanks for stopping by the blog today! I hope to catch you next time, but in the meantime, happy crafting! 😊
