Concord & 9th—Magical Day Unicorn Birthday Card
Hello, Crafters!
Today I’m back with a sweet unicorn birthday card for a soon-to-be 6 year old family member! Last year I made her a pop-up unicorn birthday card using some Lawn Fawn products, but since I haven’t been into coloring much lately, I picked up the Magical Day die set from Concord & 9th. I had picked up the coordinating stamp set last year, and I’m so happy I finally caved on this die set! It’s so cute and makes quick work of adorable unicorns.
When I started this card, I had no idea on what I was going to create other than a unicorn with pink or purple hair. I die cut the body out of Pebble cardstock from Concord & 9th (I love this neutral!), and the hooves and snout of out Cobblestone cardstock. The mane and tail were die cut out of Lilac cardstock and the horn out of C9 white glitter paper. I glued all the tiny die cuts on to the unicorn’s body and got out the stamp set to add some details to it. The speckled dots were stamped in Pebble ink for some tone-on-tone love, and the eye/snout stamp was stamped in Cobblestone ink. I like that this made the snout have a tone-on-tone look but made the eye darker against the Pebble body. I used the cheek stamp and Ballet Slipper ink to add a blushed cheek to the unicorn, and I love how Ballet Slipper ink looks on Pebble cardstock!
With the unicorn completed, I got to work on the background of this card. I wanted the unicorn to be playing around in the clouds, so I die cut some cloud layers with the border die included in the die set, and die cut them at differing angles using different sections of the die. This allowed me to have cloud layers that didn’t look too similar to each other when they were stacked up. For the blue sky, I cut down a piece of Powder cardstock to A2 size to build the rest the rest of the scene on it. I wanted to add a rainbow to this card, so I used the rainbow die on Pink Lemonade, Honeycomb, Sea Glass and Lilac cardstocks. I love this modified, pastel rainbow, and this color palette was one I picked up from a Youtube Live Carissa Wiley did (check out her video for some color inspo!). Since this rainbow was a little bit small for my liking, I got slightly hung up by it. I really wanted the unicorn to feel like it was playing in the clouds, and the size of the rainbow made me think of perspective and scaling a bit. I put the rainbow behind the clouds (which ended up being a little off-center due to the angle my cloud die cuts made) and made it so that it felt like this rainbow was far back on the horizon.
Before gluing everything down, I die cut some smaller clouds out of plain white cardstock so I could get the feel of the card. For the sentiment, I stamped the ‘have a magical day!’ sentiment from the stamp set on Ballet Slipper cardstock and heat embossed it in Alabaster embossing powder from Brutus Monroe. Once I had the sentiment assembled (I stamped it on a precut piece of cardstock so I wouldn’t have issues lining the stamp up), I finalized the placement of everything on the card, and got to gluing. Originally I thought about adding some foam squares between cloud layers, but decided against it since I would be mailing this card and not hand delivering it. I glued all of the background elements down and popped the unicorn up on some thin foam squares. I love the dimension these add to the unicorn, and I had considered putting the unicorn on a wobbler for some extra fun before deciding against it. To finish this card off, I die cut 5 hearts out of Ballet Slipper cardstock and placed them around the unicorn in the clouds.
I love how this card turned out, and I really think it will make a 6th birthday special! Do you have any unicorn lovers in your life that will make you want to pick up this die set?! 🦄
Thanks for stopping by the blog today! As always, I hope to catch you next time with more inspiration! 😊
